Ocean Acidification? Species Extinction? Does evidence support the claim?

Some believe that ocean acidification is caused by rising man-made CO2 levels in the atmosphere, and that it will result in the mass extinction of marine species, including corals, shellfish and many species of plankton, and that this, in turn, will result in the extinction of many others. Dr. Patrick Moore begs to differ.

Today in Calgary, Frontier Centre for Public Policy has released Dr. Patrick Moore's document "Ocean 'Acidification' Alarmism in Perspective". In this research paper, Moore suggests that there is little to no evidence supporting the claim that higher levels of CO2 and lower pH in the oceans will lead to species extinction. Moore asserts that all species, through genetic evolution, have shown that they are capable of adapting to radical changes in their environments. Indeed, he states that research has shown that "marine species have survived though millions of years during which CO2 was at much higher levels in the atmosphere".

Dr. Patrick Moore is the Chair of the Energy, Ecology and Prosperity program at the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, co-Founder of Greenpeace and served for nine years as President of Greenpeace Canada and seven years as a Director of Greenpeace International. Moore authored "Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout - The Making of a Sensible Environmentalist" documenting his 15 years with Greenpeace and outlining his vision for a sustainable future.
