Frontier Centre for Public Policy has released Senior Fellow Elizabeth Nickson's paper "Surviving Sustainability: Towards Enduring Prosperity". The always thought-provoking and occasionally controversial Nickson suggests that past governments in their zeal to create government funded organizational fields may have instead threatened enduring prosperity. She states that billions of tax dollars have been used to "harness and halt all resource-based industries, hampering efforts to create environmentally friendly technologies and choking prosperity".
Nickson asserts that a culture of fear has been created by an "environmental aristocracy" and has contributed to a hysteria that encourages people to demand more and more restrictions and regulations on industry. She points to studies that show these stifling regulations have even driven small rural farming operations out of business.
Nickson offers a look at several reforms to environmental overregulation including:
- The Species at Risk Act and the Endangered Species Act
- Halting land sequestration and sterilization
- Property rights/private ownership land management
